The Temple men's basketball team (0-5), in the midst of its worst start in the program's 107-year history, dropped a 71-46 decision to Penn (2-2) before 8,314 fans at The Palestra Saturday evening, December 7, 2002. The 25-point loss marked the Owls worst loss in a Philadelphia Big 5 game since suffering a 88-59 defeat to Saint Joseph's at The Palestra on February 19, 1983.

The Quakers shot an impressive 52.9 percent (27-51) for the game, including 55.6 percent (15-27) from three-point range. The Owls, on the other hand, struggled from the field, shooting just 32.7 percent (16-49) overall and 18.2 percent (4-22) from behind the arc. Temple was out-rebounded by a 36-25 margin as the Quakers also held a 24-9 advantage in the assists column.

Things started out bad for the Owls and got progressively worse. Penn hit three consecutive three pointers to open the game before taking a 13-0 advantage with 15:42 showing on the first half clock. Temple reduced the lead to nine (16-7) on an Alex Wesby layup with 11:57 remaining in the first half but it was the closest the Owls would get. David Klatsky answered Wesby's layup with one of his four three-pointers to give Penn a 19-7 advantage and the lead remained in double digits thereafter. The Quakers utilized their home court advantage well in the first stanza, shooting 64 percent (16-25) overall and 61.5 percent (8-13) from three-point range. Penn entered the locker room at halftime with a 41-16 lead.

After the break, Penn continued to put on a shooting display. The Quakers grabbed their largest lead of the game on a Jeff Schiffner three-pointer with 11:49 on the clock to give the hosts a 33-point advantage (59-26).

Wesby was the lone Owl in double digits. The Philadelphia native scored a career-high 27 points on 11 of 17 shooting while also leading the team with eight rebounds.

Temple, in the midst of a school-record six consecutive road games, returns to the hardwood Wednesday evening for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Penn State. The Owls then play nationally-ranked Illinois in Chicago on national television (ESPN) at 12 noon on Saturday, December 14.
