The Owls got off to a great start by scoring the game's first 11 points, taking an 11-0 lead with 15:21 left in the first half. UMass finally got on the scoreboard when Anthony Anderson buried a three-pointer at the 14:45 mark. The Owls took their biggest lead of the half, 21-7, on a layup by Lynn Greer with 8:18 remaining.
The Minutemen then went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit in half following two free throws by Raheim Lamb, The Owls responded, going on a 6-0 run of their own upping the lead back to 27-14 with 4:39 left before halftime. The Owls maintained that 13-point lead until a slam dunk by Micah Brand with :19 left that cut the halftime lead to 34-23.
The Owls converted nine UMass turnovers into 12 points which was basically the difference in the first half. All-America candidate Lynn Greer led the Owls with 13 first-half points.
The Owls took their largest lead of the game with 15:07 left when Greer canned two free throws but the Minutemen had a run of their own.
Led by Anthony Anderson's two three-point baskets the Minutemen went on a 15-2 run to get to within 47-43 with 9:29 remaining. From there, the Owls went on an 8-0 run fueled by baskets by Hawkins and freshman Nile Murry and a three-pointer by Alex Wesby. Massachusetts would score just four points the remainder of the game as the Owls used a stifling defense to thwart any hopes of a UMass comeback.
Lynn Greer led the Owls with 19 points while Hawkins chipped in with 17 and senior Kevin Lyde contributed his third double-double of the season, registering 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Owls continue their three-game home stand on Wednesday night with an ESPN match up against Western Division leading Xavier at The Liacouras Center at 8:00 p.m.
