OWLS TURN THE LIGHTS OUT ON XAVIER

2.20.02 | Men's Basketball

The Temple Owls men's basketball team (12-13, 9-4 A-10) waited 20 minutes for the lights to be turned back on after pre-game introductions and then spent the rest of the game shooting the lights out.

The Owls shot 49 percent from the floor to blow out Atlantic 10 West leader Xavier (19-5, 11-2 A-10), 67-56, in front of 6,051 fans at the Liacouras Center on Feb. 20.

Lynn Greer led the Owls with 20 points and had three assists. Alex Wesby continued his strong play with 18 points on seven of 12 shooting. David Hawkins added 11 points as the Owls cruised to their sixth victory in seven games.

"Everyone of the games we play from here on in is a championship game," Temple head coach John Chaney said. "Xavier is a great team and should be ranked higher."

Kevin Lyde scored nine points and along with Ron Rollerson held Xavier All-America candidate David West to 12 points. Lyde also grabbed a team high seven rebounds and had four assists.

"When Kevin comes to play it makes a big difference," Temple head coach John Chaney said. "Ron Rollerson gave us some good minutes in the second half. No one can stop him when he moves."

Rollerson scored six points and had three blocked shots. Brian Polk also added three points for the Owls.

Lionel Chalmers led the Muskateers with 15 points to go along with West and Dave Young, who each added 12.

The Owls next host St. Bonaventure Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. at the Liacouras Center. The Owls will salute Lynn Greer and the rest of the Owls seniors in their final home game in a Temple uniform. For tickets call 215-204-TIXX or stop by the Liacouras Center box office.
