THE TEMPLE OWLS USED A BALANCED SCORING ATTACK IN WINNING A 71-42 ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE ROAD GAME AT RHODE ISLAND
2.6.02 | Men's Basketball
The Temple Owls (9-12, 6-3) used a balance scoring attack and solid defensive effort to come away with a 71-42 road win at Rhode Island. It was the Owls' 51st consecutive victory when holding a team under 50 points and the fifth consecutive game against Rhode Island when the Rams were held under 50 points. Lynn Greer, who led all scorers with 18 points, got the Owls off and running when he hit consecutive three-point baskets, one of which he was fouled on to complete a four-point play and put the Owls up early, 9-4. Alex Wesby who registered a double-double and tied his career high with 10 rebounds came off the bench to score five straight points as the Owls extended their first half lead to 21-9 with 4:02 before halftime. The Owls advantage reached 28-11 when Greer hit another three-pointer which tied him with Mike Vreeswyk as the Owls' all-time leader with 271 three-point field goals made. The Rams had just five field goals and were 0-for-12 from behind the arc in the first half. The Owls onslaught continued in the second half as Wesby hit back-to-back three's early on to extend the lead to 42-19 at the 15:15 mark. Rhode Island's Dinno Daniels finally hit the Rams first three-point field goal of the night with 13:09 remaining to bring the Rams to within 44-27, but that's as close as Rhode Island would get. The Owls who in their last four games were shooting 92.0% from the foul line (69-for-75), didn't get to the line often but certainly didn't hurt themselves canning 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Along with Greer, the Owls had three others score in double-figures. Kevin Lyde scored 14 points, his first double-figure scoring game since January 16th against St. Bonaventure, along with Wesby who had 13 points and Hawkins who had 10, all in the second half. The Owls return to the hardwood on Saturday when they travel to our nation's capitol to take on the George Washington Colonials. Tipoff is at 12:00 Noon for this nationally televised contest on ESPN.
