Field Hockey 2001 Review

Under head coach Lauren Fuchs entering her ninth year the Temple field hockey team posted a 8-11 record and 2-4 record and finished fin fifth place in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 2-4 record. The Owls' 2-4 conference record marked the first time in three seasons that Temple did not qualify for the A-10 Conference playoffs and lost more than one conference game. The Owls played it's usual tough schedule, which included a non conference win over 13 William and Mary and losses to 1 North Carolina and 15 Penn State. Temple was ranked as high as 17 nationally and briefly had a stint in the national top 20. The Owls were 8-1 in games in which they were leading or tied at the half and 0-10 in games they trailed at the half.

Junior Virginia Gonzalez (Reading, Pa./Twin Valley) led the team in points with 16. She had seven goals and two assists, including three-game winning goals against Virginia Commonwealth (VCU), Penn and Rhode Island. Senior JoAnn Engestrom (Middletown, MD./Middletown) had 11 points (five goals and 1 assists) in 18 games . Engestrom had one game-winning goal against Ursinus. Senior Juliann Leskiw (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) added 10 points (four goals and two assists) and two game-winning goals . Senior goalkeeper April Herman (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) finished with a 2.40 goals against average. Herman logged 1021 minutes and made a 130 saves in 18 games. Sophomore backup goalkeepr Erin Conroy (New York, NY./Centereach) (played in seven games ) finished with 3.38 goals against average and 24 saves in a 163 minutes. Freshman Talia Ruth (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) led the team with six defensive saves in 16 games. Junior Emily Moyer (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) recorded six points all on assists and was second on the team with five defensive saves.

A number of Owls received post season honors. Seniors JoAnn Engestrom, Kacy Ziomek (Sweet Valley, Pa./ Lake Lehman) and junior Virginia Gonzalez were selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team. Joann Engestom, Emily Moyer and Kacy Ziomek were selected Mid-Atlantic Regional All-Americans. Freshman Andrea Duva (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) and Talia Ruth each earned one A-10 Conference Rookie of the Week citation. The Owls once again excelled in the classroom as Gonzalez, Rachel Kasper, Moyer, Erin Conroy and Haley Dervinis all were named to the Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll.
