TEMPLE FIELD HOCKEY UPENDS NO. 16 DELAWARE IN OVERTIME, 3-2

9.25.02 | Field Hockey

The Temple Owls (2-6) almost let one slip away but Melissa DeCesaris (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) scored just 3:15 into overtime to upset No. 16 Delaware, 3-2.

The Owls, who maintained constant pressure on the Fightin' Blue Hens defense, opened the scoring just 4:54 into the game when Morgan Faria (South Dartmouth/Dartmouth) scored on a super cross-ball feed from Susan Nase (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township).

Delaware (5-4) tied the score, 1-1, just minutes later on an unassisted goal by Lauren Carr. Only a super goalie effort by Delaware's Stephanie Judefind kept the ame even at halftime.

Temple maintained pressure on the Hens defense, keeping play in the home teams end, and finally went back on top, 2-1, on an unassisted goal by Morgan Faria. It was her second goal of the game coming off a scramble in front of the net.

But the Fightin' Blue Hens made the most of their few opportunities, knotting the game with 10:15 left on a penalty corner deflection by Leah Geib, assisted by Erica LaBar.

The Owls wasted little time in the extra period as DeCesaris scored on a penalty corner off a beautiful feed from Faria to Haley Dervinis (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), who placed the ball down perfectly, for the game-winning shot.

Mary Beth Zakrzewski (North Wales, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic, who played goalie in place of the injured Erin Conroy (Centereach, NY/Centereach), came up with nine saves, including six in the second half.

The Owls return home on Sunday to take on American University at Geasy Field at 1:00 p.m.
