MEN'S BASKETBALL COMMITS 16 TURNOVERS IN 61-54 LOSS AT DUQUESNE
1.8.03 | Men's Basketball
Junior David Hawkins, who entered the game needing 22 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau in his career, scored 19 on five-of-ten shooting to lead the Owls. Senior Alex Wesby, who entered the game with a 13.5 points-per-game average, scored a season-low two points on one-of-eight shooting.
Temple's Antywane Robinson opened the scoring at the 18:32 mark in a sluggish first half that saw the teams combine for just 39 points. The Owls led for the next 15 minutes of the opening stanza before Elijah Palmer's fast break slam dunk with 3:35 remaining tied the score at 15. The Dukes scored seven of the final nine first half points to take a 22-17 lead into the locker room.
After the break, a Jimmy Tricco three-pointer gave the Dukes a 28-19 advantage with 16:57 showing on the clock. Temple, despite its sporadic shooting and inconsistent ball handling, stayed within striking distance. A Hawkins three-pointer with 6:58 remaining tied the score at 42. A pair of Hawkins free-throws less than a minute later knotted the score again at 44. Unfortunately, the set of second half ties marked the closest the Owls would come to victory, as the home squad scored 17 of the game's final 27 points.
Duquesne took its largest lead of the game on a pair of Palmer free throws, giving the Dukes a 61-51 advantage with 0:18 seconds showing on the clock. Hawkins deposited a three-pointer in the contest's final seconds to register the 61-54 final.
Temple remains on the road, traveling to Richmond for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, January 11. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
