10.10.03 | Field Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Melissa DeCesaris' goal 26:45 into the first half off of a penalty corner was the only score of the game as the Temple University field hockey team (6-6 overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) defeated the University of Massachusetts (2-10, 0-1), 1-0, on Friday evening at Garber Field. The Minutewomen have now lost eight straight games, while the Owls posted their second consecutive shutout. Temple has now held its opponents scoreless in the last 152:45 of action. The last goal allowed by the Owls was at the 12:45 mark of the second half of their 3-2 loss to VCU on Saturday, September 27.

Both teams started off slow, but with less than nine minutes left in the half DeCesaris scored the winner on a penalty corner off assists from freshman Lindsay Holman and senior Haley Dervinis giving the Owls a 1-0 halftime lead.

Massachusetts' best chance to score came early in the first half. Sophomore Patricia Borneo took a rebound off a penalty corner and rifled a shot at Temple goalkeeper Erin Conroy, but she turned it away.

Conroy, who is second in the nation in saves, recorded seven saves in earning her second straight shutout. She has not allowed a goal in 148:15. Conroy was replaced for the last four and half minutes of the VCU game by Mary Beth Zakrewski. Since the VCU game the Owl defense has allowed only nine shots on goal in over a 150 minutes of action.

UMass junior goalkeeper Christine Tocco, who is currently fifth in the nation in saves, made three stops.

Temple out-shot UMass, 15-11, and had an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners.
