FIELD HOCKEY BLANKS RHODE ISLAND, 1-0, ON A GOAL WITH NO TIME REMAINING
10.12.03 | Field Hockey
The Rams and Owls played the entire 70 minutes without a goal, but with under 10 seconds left in regulation Temple had a breakaway and was awarded a penalty corner. Time expired, but the corner has to be completed for the half to officially end. So with 0:00 on the clock the Owls were able to complete the play and before the Rams could clear the ball, Temple earned another penalty corner.
On the second penalty corner, Holman scored off assists from Haley Dervinis and Talia Ruth to give the Owls their third straight victory. Temple goalkeeper Erin Conroy (four saves), who is second in the nation in saves, posted her third straight shutout and has now held opponents scoreless for the last 218 minutes of game action.
Rhode Island had a scoring opportunity with just under three minutes remaining, but junior Jess Arnold's shot was saved by a diving Conroy.
Temple held a 9-4 advantage in shots and a 15-7 edge on penalty corners.
The Owls have placed themselves in a good position for the postseason with three of their last four remaining conference games at home. The top four teams in the conference qualify for the A-10 Field Hockey Championships.
Temple will host cross-town foe Penn on Wednesday, October 15 at 3:30 p.m.
