TEMPLE TO HOST PENN STATE ON SATURDAY IN NIGHTCAP OF MEN'S-WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER
12.12.03 | Men's Basketball
The Temple women's basketball team will open the doubleheader with a game against Kentucky at 2:00 p.m.
This will be the sixth straight season that Penn State and Temple play with the Owls winning the last three meetings and four of the six over that time frame. The two teams played on a regular basis when both programs were members of the A-10, but the Nittany Lions left the league following the 1992-93 season to join the Big Ten Conference. Overall, Temple owns a 56-32 advantage in the series and Hall of Fame coach John Chaney has a 21-5 record against PSU.
Penn State is off to a 3-3 start this season under the direction of first-year head coach Ed DeChellis. A PSU grad ('82), DeChellis spent the previous seven seasons as the head coach at East Tennessee State. He guided ETSU to a 20-11 record and a near upset of Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year.
The Owls are coming off their best outing of the season, albeit a 70-66 loss at Arizona State on Tuesday. In that contest, Temple played without sophomore forward Antwayne Robinson for all but one minute (ankle) and had three players foul out of the contest. Freshman Dustin Salisbery came off the bench to score 18 points and grab 13 rebounds in the team's valiant effort.
Robinson will be sidelined the next three to four weeks with a sorained left ankle.
