FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS DAVIDSON 2-1 IN SEASON OPENER

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple field hockey team defeated Davidson, 2-1, on Saturday at Geasey Field in the season opener for both teams. Temple overcame a slow start and scored the final two goals to begin the 2003 season on a winning note.

Sophomore Melissa Fritze scored the winning goal and junior Jillian Thomas tallied the other Owl score. Senior Haley Dervinis assisted on both goals to help lift the Owls to the win.

Fritze scored the game-winning goal on a deflection of shot from senior Melissa DeCesaris with 30:17 remaining in the second-half, giving the Owls the lead for the first time in the contest.

Davidson's Emily Davis opened the scoring on an unassisted goal with 29:37 remaining in the first half giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Thomas scored with 14:12 remaining in the first half off assists from senior Rachel Kasper and Dervinis knotting the score at 1-1.

Davidson's goalkeeper Susan Nolan had nine saves. Owls' keeper Erin Conroy had five saves.

Temple out-shot Davidson, 26-8, and held an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Owls will host Maine on Monday, September 1 at Geasey Field. The start time is 12 p.m.
