FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO #9 IOWA, 1-0

Iowa City, IA- The Temple field hockey team facing its third Top 10 opponent of the season in #9 Iowa was defeated 1-0 on a stormy, Sunday afternoon at the University of Iowa's Grant Field. The game was delayed 45 minutes due to a thunderstorm. Iowa's Debbie Birrell scored the winning goal with 14:30 remaining in the game to hand the Owls another heart-breaking loss to a Top 10 ranked team this season.The win improves the #9 Hawkeyes' record to 5-2, while the Owls fell to 4-4 overall.
After a scoreless first half the Hawkeyes' Debbie Birrell scored the winner off an assist by Pattie Gilhern.
Owls goalkeeper Erin Conroy was spectacular in goal posting 16 saves and Hawkeyes keeper Barb Weinberg recorded no saves in earning the shutout.
Temple kept the game close despite being out shot, 33-1, and also loss the battle of penalty corners, 14-1. Three of the Owls' four losses have been to teams ranked in the Top 10 #9 Iowa, #8 Penn State and #2 North Carolina.
Temple will head home to host Delaware on Wednesday, September 24 at 3.30 p.m.
