VCU TOPS TEMPLE IN FIELD HOCKEY, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team was defeated 3-2 by Virginia Commonwealth on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Rams' Jennifer Howard had two goals including the game-winner with 12:45 left in the game as VCU overcame an early one-goal second half deficit to gain the victory. The win improves the Rams' record to 4-4, while the Owls lost their third straight game to fall to 4-6 overall.

Howard opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 18:50 mark in the first half. Temple freshman Lindsay Holman scored her first career goal with 14:35 left in the half to tie the score at 1-1.

Dannon Mehaffey then gave Temple a brief 2-1 lead off a pass from Andrea Duva with 21:11 remaining in the second half. VCU's Madeia Mustaffa quickly responded with a goal 61 seconds later on an assist by Karlijn Jansen to knot the score at 2-2. Howard followed with the winner off a pass from Emily Smith with 12:45 left in the contest. The last three minutes of the game was played in a pouring rain storm.

Owls goalkeeper Erin Conroy had seven saves and allowed all three goals. Conroy was replaced by Mary Beth Zakrzewski, who posted two saves in 4:30 of action. The Rams keeper Abby Stiles had eight saves in 70:00 minutes.

Each team had 15 shots, while Temple held a slight advantage in penalty corners, 9-8. Five of Temple's six loses have been by one goal, only #2 North Carolina defeated the Owls by more than a goal, taking a 6-1 decision in the championship game of the Temple Invitational.

Temple will next host Fairfield on Sunday, October 5 at 1:00 p.m.
