FIELD HOCKEY ADVANCES TO MEET UNC IN TEMPLE INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple Owls field hockey team (3-0) defeated Providence College, 4-1 on Saturday and advanced to play North Carolina, a 3-0 winner over Michigan State, in the championship game of the 2003 Temple Invitational. The Owls and Tar Heels will square off at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Geasey Field.

Monica Jiao began Temple's scoring with a goal at the 16:38 mark of the first half. A Jillian Thomas goal put the Cherry and White ahead 2-0 at intermission.

Goals by Haley Dervinis and Talia Ruth, assisted by Dervinis and Rachel Kasper, gave the Owls a 4-0 advantage. Melissa McGow scored Providence's lone goal with 3:12 left in the contest.

Temple's goalkeeper Erin Conroy recorded 10 saves and did not allow a goal. Mary Zakrewski played the last 15 minutes in goal for the Owls, recording three saves and allowing one goal.

In the day's second game, North Carolina (3-0) and Michigan State battled to a scoreless tie through halftime. Laree Beans opened up the Tar Heels' scoring attack on an assist from Kelsey Keeran with 23:00 minutes to play in the second period.

Keeran then gave North Carolina a 2-0 advantage on a Carey Fetering-Smith assist with 15:30 remaining. Laura Douglass then tallied UNC's final goal at the 14:00 minute mark. Marie Bands and Katy Tran combined on the shutout.

Michigan State will meet Providence in the consolation game at 11:00 a.m.
