MEN'S BASKETBALL LOOKING TO MAKE COACH CHANEY'S BIRTHDAY A HAPPY ONE AT PENN

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple Owls men's basketball players would like nothing more than to give their Hall of Fame coach John Chaney the present he wants most for his 72nd birthday - a win. To do that, the Owls will have to defeat a strong Penn Quakers squad, which has won the last two meetings in the Philadelphia Big Five series, at The Palestra on Wednesday night (8:00 p.m./CN8/WPHT 1210 AM).

Penn, 7-5, 1-2 in Big Five play, enters the game fresh, having a week off since its last game, a 71-47 win over Big Five rival La Salle at the Tom Goal Arena on January 14. The Quakers drained nine three-pointers in that blowout and have made 104 treys on the season, hitting 38 percent of their shots from long range.

Senior Jeff Schiffner leads the balanced Penn attack with a 13.8 scoring average. Senior Adam Chubb (6.7 rpg.) and junior Tim Begley each average 11.2 points per game with Begley leading the squad with 34 three-pointers.

Senior All-America candidate David Hawkins continues his one-man offensive show for the Owls. The 6-5 guard ranks second in the A-10 and ninth nationally in scoring (23.2 ppg.). He has tallied 20 or more points in eight straight games and has led the team in 11 of its 13 contests.

Temple, 5-8, 0-1, leads the series, 37-21, and Chaney is 20-3 all-time against the Quakers. The legendary coach, however, is a mere 4-3 at Temple when playing on his birthday.
