MARK MACON NAMED TO ESPN SILVER ANNIVERSARY TEAM

AMHERST, MA -- Mark Macon, one of the greatest players to ever don the Cherry and White, was named to the five-man ESPN Atlantic 10 Conference Silver Anniversary team. The team, picked by a seven member blue ribbon panel, celebrates the top players in the conference since the birth of the all-sports channel in 1979. It was announced at halftime of the Temple-UMass game which was broadcast on ESPN2.

"It is a great honor," stated Macon, a first-year assistant coach with the Owls. "There have been so many great players that have played in the league, to be named to a five-man is beyond words."

"To be honest, I really thought Eddie (Jones) and Aaron (McKie) would make it before me," he added. "They really should have more players on the team. To limit it to just five is not fair to all the quality players that have competed in the Atlantic 10."

Macon, the Atlantic 10 Conference's all-time leading scorer with 2,609 points, is the only player in conference history to be named first team all-conference in four seasons. The 1987-88 National Freshman of the Year and first team All-American is one of three unanimous selections to the ESPN team. The other two unanimous selections are David West of Xavier and Marcus Camby of UMass, both National Players of the Year while in college. Rounding out the team is Saint Joseph's Jameer Nelson, the only active player named to a Silver Anniversary team, and Lou Roe of UMass.
