MEN'S BASKETBALL TO OPEN A-10 SCHEDULE AT GEORGE WASHINGTON

1.6.04 | Men's Basketball

WASHINGTON, DC - Fresh off its first road win of the season, a 59-50 victory at Indiana on January 3, the Temple University men's basketball team opens its Atlantic 10 Conference season against George Washington at the Smith Center on Wednesday, January 7 (7:30 p.m./WPHT 1210 AM). The Owls have had a tremendous amount of success in A-10 openers (16-5) as well as at the Smith Center. Temple (4-5), which has won the last seven meetings with GW, owns a 17-1 record at the Smith Center with its lone loss coming on February 3, 1996.

George Washington (6-6, 0-1), which opened the year with four straight wins, enters the game on a four-game losing streak. All four losses, however, came on the road, with the last two at the hands of nationally-ranked foes (#18 Texas, 88-72 and #9 SJU, 90-81). Head coach Karl Hobbs' squad loves an up-tempo pace, and currently is tied with Saint Joseph's for second in the league in scoring (75.1 ppg.). The Colonials feature a balanced attack with junior guard T.J. Thompson (15.0 ppg.) and sophomore forward Pops Mensha-Bonsu (12.5 ppg.) leading the way offensively.

Senior All-America candidate David Hawkins continues to lead Temple, and ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring with a 22.7 scoring average. Sophomore Mardy Collins, who moved to the point guard slot last game, is the only other Owl scoring in double figures (13.7 ppg.).

Temple, which has won three of its last four games, is playing its third game of a four-game road swing. The Owls will next travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers on Saturday afternoon.
