UMASS EDGES FIELD HOCKEY, 3-2, IN OVERTIME

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple field hockey team lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Massachusetts in a key A-10 match-up on a chilly afternoon at Geasey Field. UMass senior Caitlin Beresin tallied two unassisted goals and freshman Kara Murphy scored the game-winner in the 71st minute. The win improves the Minutewomen's record to 5-11, 2-1 in the A-10, while the Owls' record falls to 6-8 and 0-2, A-10.

 

Senior Andrea Duva opened the scoring with a goal off a feed from junior Jen Adamek in the 31st minute. Beresin then tied the score just seven seconds later.  That scored remained 1-1throughout the remainder of the first half.

 

Talia Ruth scored on a penalty corner off assists from sophomore Lindsay Holman and junior Katie Stevenson in the 57th minute to give the Owls a 2-1 lead,  Beresin then scored her second goal of the game in the 66th minute, knotting the score at 2-2.

 

Murphy tallied the game-winner in the first minute of overtime off a rebound from Marije Tigchelaar extending UMass' season-high win streak to three games.

 

Temple's Erin Conroy was spectacular in goal, posting 21 saves, 15 in the second half.UMass goalie Christine Tocco had 17 saves.

 

UMass out-shot the Owls, 27-24, while Temple held an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.

 

Temple will host Rhode Island on Sunday (Oct.17) at noon.
