10.9.04 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA- Junior Melissa Fritze scored goals in both the fifth and sixth minute of the game to lead Temple to a 4-1 win over Georgetown in a non-conference field hockey game on a sunny Friday afternoon at Geasey Field. The win raises the Owls' record to 6-5 overall heading into their conference opener Saturday against the defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion Richmond Spiders. The loss drops the Hoyas' record to 2-10 and extends their losing streak to seven games.

Junior Ashley Shepps followed Fritze's early goals with an unassisted tally in the 12th minute to extend the Owls' lead to 3-0.  Georgetown's Megan Leahy scored on a penalty corner in the 22nd minute off an assist from Lauren Sheets and Caroline Cole for the Hoyas' lone goal.  Jen Adamek completed the scoring in the contest with a second half goal.

Temple goalie Erin Conroy had two saves in 50 minutes of action.  Sandra Becker recorded one save over the final 20 minutes for the Owls. Georgetown goalie Abbey Walker had five saves. Temple held an 11-6 advantage in shots and each team had five penalty corners in the game.

The Owls will look for revenge against two-time defending A-10 Champions Richmond (8-2) on Homecoming Weekend Saturday (Oct.9) at noon. It is a rematch of the A-10 Championship game last season.
