11.25.04 | Men's Basketball
COLUMBIA, SC - Thanksgiving is a time to spend with family and friends. The Temple men's basketball family will be together for the holiday weekend as they visit the Colonial Center, but their will be very few friends of the Owl program on hand when they take on host South Carolina Saturday evening (5:00 p.m./WPHT 1210 AM).
Temple fresh off a 75-57 victory at Georgetown Monday night, will be looking for its second win of the season. The Owls have featured a balanced offensive attack in its first two games with four players averaging double figures in scoring. Junior Mardy Collins leads the attack with a 17.5 scoring average. The team co-captain has been stellar in running the offense, dishing 18 assists against just two turnovers. In the win over the Hoyas, Collins connected on all five of his three-point attempts for a game-high 22 points.
Three other Owls, sixth-man Dustin Salisbery and newcomers Wayne Marshall and Mark Tyndale, average 14 points per game. Marshall also leads the Cherry and White in rebounding (8.0 rpg.) while Tyndale tops the squad in steals (4). Salisbery has been instant offense off the bench, scoring his 28 points over just 33 minutes. Juniors Antywane Robinson (7.0 ppg./6.5 rpg.) and Keith Butler (6.0 ppg./6.0 rpg.) round out the starting unit.
South Carolina, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Dave Odom, will be looking to remain unbeaten against non-conference foes in the Colonial Center. The Gamecocks are 17-0 against non-conference foes with one of those victories, coming at the hands of the Owls, 66-47, on December 2, 2002. Senior forward Carlos Powell, a preseason second team all-SEC pick, leads USC with an 18.0 scoring average. Junior forward Tarence Kinsey also scores in double figures (14.0 ppg.). USC will be looking to extract some revenge on the Owls for a 71-61 loss at the Liacouiras Center last year (12/15/03). It was the first loss of the season for the Gamecocks after starting the season 8-0.
