11.28.04 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA -- Temple junior guard Mardy Collins earned the his first Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week honor of his career in helping the Owls split a pair of road games. Collins, who came off the bench for the first time in his three years on North Broad Street at South Carolina Saturday, averaged 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals over the two game stretch.
The Temple co-captain began the week with a 22-point, seven-assist effort in the Owls 75-57 win over Georgetown at the MCI Center on November 22. The Philadelphia native connected on eight-of-13 from the field and was a perfect five-of-five from behind the arc.
In Saturday's 60-46 loss to South Carolina, Collins did not start due to breaking head coach John Chaney's rule for wearing proper head gear to the game. He entered the game at the first media timeout and proceeded to record the nine steals, the second most steals in Temple and Atlantic 10 Conference history. Collins also tallied 12 points on six-of-13 shooting to extend his streak of double-figure scoring games to 21.
On the year, Collins, a preseason first team all-conference pick, leads the Owls in scoring (15.7 ppg.), assists (5.7 apg.) and steals (4.0 spg.). He also owns a 5.7:1 assist to turnover ratio.
