PHILADELPHIA - Senior All-America candidate David Hawkins was named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week for the Week ending January 31. Hawkins, the conference's leading scorer (23.9 ppg.), averaged 28.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 3.5 steals as Temple split its two games during the week.
In the Owls' 76-57 win over St. Bonaventure on Jan. 28, Hawkins scored a game-high 21 points. He also had six rebounds and six assists, as well as five steals to help Hall of Fame coach John Chaney pick up his 700th career win. In an 83-71 loss to Saint Joseph's on Jan. 31, he tied his career-high with 36 points and added seven rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. For the week he shot 20-of-43 (.465) from the field.
The 6-4 guard has now scored 20 or more points in a school record-tying 12 consecutive games. The Owl without a Vowel, Bill Mlkvy, also scored 20-or-more points in 12 straight games during the 1950-51 season.
This is the first Player of the Week citation of his career.
