2.13.04 | Men's Basketball
All-America candidate David Hawkins leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks third in the nation in scoring with a 24.1 average. The 6-5 Temple senior also boasts a streak of 15 games scoring at least 20 points. Sophomore Mardy Collins, coming off his best outing of the year (21 points, 9-13 FGs at URI), has tallied double figures in nine straight games.
February has been Temple's month, especially under Hall of Fame head coach John Chaney. The Owls are 3-0 so far this February, and own a 143-48 record (.749) during Chaney's 22-year tenure at the school.
Senior Gerald Riley paces the Hoyas with an 18.9 scoring average. The 6-6 guard, who played with the Owls' Nehemiah Ingram at Baldwin High in Milledgeville, GA, scored a career-high 37 points to lead GU to an 80-64 win at Miami on February 7. Sophomore forward Brandon Bowman also averages double figures, scoring at a 16.5 clip.
This will be the first meeting between the schools since the 1998-99 season opener when the #7 Owls defeated the Hoyas, 65-49, at Madison Square Garden in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. It is also Georgetown's first trip to Temple since the 1952-53 season.
