MEN'S BASKETBALL LOOKS TO EXTEND WIN STREAK AGAINST DUQUESNE ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT
2.17.04 | Men's Basketball
Senior All-America candidate David Hawkins continues his torrid scoring to pace the Owl attack. Hawkins, who has tallied 20-or-more points in a school-record 16 straight games, currently leads the Atlantic 10 Conference and ranks third nationally with a 24.3 scoring average. Sophomore guard Mardy Collins also has been hot of late, tallying double figures the past 10 games for a 16.7 average.
The Owls, 11-10, 5-5 in A-10 play, will be looking to extract a measure of revenge against the Dukes as Duquesne won last year's meeting, 61-54, in Pittsburgh. That snapped an eight-game Temple win streak in the series.
Duquesne, 9-13, 4-7, comes into the contest with a three-game losing streak. Senior forward Elijah Palmer tops the Dukes in scoring (14.6 ppg.) and rebounding (6.1 rpg.). Sophomore guard Bryant McAllister also tallies double figures in scoring (10.8 ppg.). Junior Martin Osimani, in his first year with DU, leads the conference in assists per game, averaging 5.8 per contest.
Tonight's game will also serve as the University's 5th Annual Student-Athlete Academic Recognition Event. Eight Owl teams will be honored at halftime for attaining grade point averages of 3.0 or above. The teams that will be recognized include Field Hockey, Women's Track, Fencing, Women's Tennis, Women's Gymnastics, Women's Soccer, Softball and Volleyball.
