MEN'S BASKETBALL LOOKS TO CLINCH SECOND PLACE IN A-10 EAST WITH WIN OVER FORDHAM

The Owls, 13-11, 7-6 in A-10 play, defeated the Rams, 57-47, to start the month. TU's only loss in February has been to #2 Saint Joseph's at The Palestra, 76-53, on February 21.
John Chaney's Owls used a balanced attack on Wednesday evening to earn a 74-70 come-from-behind overtime win at La Salle. Four players scored in double figures for Temple led by All-America candidate David Hawkins' 26 points. The Owls scored the final eight points of regulation to send the game into overtime and Mardy Collins tallied five of his 16 points in the extra stanza to lift TU to the victory. Tyreek Byard scored in double figures for the third straight game, posting a career-high 14 points. Dustin Salisbery contributed 11 points in 14 minutes off the bench.
First-year head coach Dereck Whittenburg's Rams snapped a nine-game losing streak on February 21 with a 75-61 win over UMass at Rose Hill Gym. FU lost its last contest, 93-56, at Duquesne and brings a 6-19 overall mark and a 2-11 A-10 record into the game. Senior Michael Haynes leads Fordham with a 17,1 scoring average. Sophomore guard John Blackgrove (14.2 ppg.) and senior guard Mark Jarrell-Wright (11.6 ppg.) also score in double figures for the Rams.
Temple leads the series, 31-9, and has an 18-game win streak against the Rams. Fordham will also be trying to win its first game in Philadelphia since joining the Atlantic 10 Conference at the start of the 1995-96 season.
