FIELD HOCKEY EARNS 2003 NFHCA DIVISION I NATIONAL ACADEMIC TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL HONORS

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple field hockey team was one of 37 teams in Division I to earn the 2003 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Team Academic Achievement honors. The teams selected to receive the National Academic Team Award have achieved a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 during the fall semester of the 2003-04 academic year. All student-athletes listed on the institution's NCAA squad list are included when calculating the team's GPA.

Six Owls were named to the 2003 NFHCA Division I All-Academic team. Seniors Haley Dervinis, Rachel Kasper, junior Andrea Duva, sophomores Ashley Shepps and Dannon Mehaffey and freshman Leanne Vogelsong were all named to the squad.

Dervinis, who finished her stellar career second all-time on the Owls' assists list with 42. She was Temple's leading scorer this season with 19 points on four goals and 11 assists. Dervinis also was named to the first-team A-10 All-Conference, All-Tournament and All-Academic and second-team Mid-Atlantic Region team this season.

Kasper started 21 of 22 games and posted six points on the season. Duva started 21 of 22 games and recorded nine points on three goals and three assists. Shepps started seven of 22 games, posting two points on two assists.

Mehaffey, who also was selected to the 2003 A-10 All-Tournament team, recorded two points on the season and was a disruptive force on the defense side of the field. Vogelsong saw limited action appearing in two games.

The Owls completed the 2003 campaign with an 11-11 overall mark and were defeated in the A-10 Championship game by Richmond.
