MEN'S BASKETBALL TO TAKE ON RICHMOND IN A-10 QUARTERFINALS
3.11.04 | Men's Basketball
The Owls finished the regular season one of the hottest teams in the A-10. The Cherry and White was winners in eight of their last 10 games with the lone losses coming at #1 Saint Joseph's (76-53 on Feb. 21) and to Xavier (70-69) on Senior Day at the Liacouras Center (March 6).
David Hawkins, named to CBSsportsline.com's All-America second team, has never been hotter. In the final week of the regular season Hawkins averaged 29.3 points over three games. He tallied a career-high 41 points, including the Owls' final 17 points in the second overtime of a 98-92 win over UMass (Mar. 3). The 6-5 two-guard followed that with a 31-point outing on Senior Day against Xavier. In that contest, he drained a career-best eight three-pointers, one shy of the Temple single-game record. Hawkins, who ranks third nationally with a 24.6 scoring average, became the third Owl player and 10th in Atlantic 10 Conference history to reach the 2,000-point plateau. He enters the tournament with 2,032 career points.
Temple has had more success in Atlantic 10 Tournament play than any other conference member. The Owls have won more games (40), played in more semifinal games (20) and championship games (13) than any league member past or present. Temple has also won a record six Atlantic 10 Tournament titles.
