TOUGH COMPETITION AWAITS TEMPLE MEN'S BASKETBALL IN 2004-05

8.22.04 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple University has announced its 2004-05 men's basketball non-conference schedule and Hall of Fame head coach John Chaney has outdone even himself with this slate. Known for putting together one of the nation's toughest schedules, Chaney has the Owls taking on seven teams that qualified for postseason play during the 2003-04 season.

"We are facing the toughest competition we have ever faced with as many Top 20 teams that we have ever had on the schedule," stated the legendary Temple coach. "We are hopeful that this team will be able to meet the demands of this schedule."

The Owls non-conference schedule includes three teams from the ACC (Duke, Maryland and Wake Forest), three teams from the SEC (Alabama, Auburn and South Carolina), two Philadelphia Big Five (Penn and Villanova) as well as Arizona State (Pac-10), Georgetown (Big East) and Princeton (Ivy). Six of the teams competed in the 2004 NCAA Tournament with three advancing to the Sweet 16, two to the Elite Eight and one to the Final Four. Villanova also reached postseason play last year, advancing to the NIT quarterfinals.

Three of Temple's non-conference games will be televised nationally. ESPN will televise the Duke (1/8) and Maryland (1/15) games while the Owls game against Wake Forest (12/13) will be carried on ESPN2.

Chaney, who became the 16th Division I coach to eclipse 700 career victories last season, returns eight letterwinners from last year's squad that posted a 15-14 record, earning a berth in the NIT. It marked the 21st straight season that the Owls have competed in postseason play.

To continue that streak, Temple will have to replace 2,000-point scorer David Hawkins. The 6-5 guard saved his best season for his last with the Cherry and White. He led the Atlantic 10 Conference and finished fourth nationally with a 24.4 scoring average.

See attached for complete non-conference schedule. The entire Temple men's basketball schedule will be released in September.
