FIELD HOCKEY SQUEEZES PAST SYRACUSE ORANGE, 4-3 IN OVERTIME

PHILADEPHIA- Junior Jillian Thomas had two goals and an assist in lifting Temple (2-0) to a 4-3, overtime victory over Syracuse (0-1) on a humid Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. Junior Katie Stevenson added two assists and sophomore Lindsay Holman had a goal and an assist. The Orange were paced by senior Lindsay Pierson, who posted a goal and two assists.
After a scoreless first half both teams came out aggressive on the offensive end in the second half.
Syracuse senior Brittany Carriero scored the first goal of the contest off an assist from Pierson with 32:50 remaining in the second half.
Thomas tied the score at 1-1 off a penalty corner at the 29:27 mark. Junior Ashley Shepps gave the Owls the lead scoring off a pass from fellow junior Dannon Mehaffey at the 26:57 mark.
Syracuse's Pierson tied the score on an unassisted goal with 7:28 remaining in regulation. Freshman Jessica Lerew put the Orange up 3-2 off a penalty corner assist from Pierson.
Thomas came through with just 1:30 remaining in the contest, scoring off a penalty corner that was assisted by Stevenson and sophomore Monica Jiao to send the game into overtime.
Sophomore Lindsay Holman scored the game-winner with 6:20 left in the first overtime off an assist from Thomas.
Temple All-American goalkeeper Erin Conroy had 11 saves and Syracuse net minder Jessica Dahle posted six saves.
The Orange out-shot the Owls, 19-18, while the Temple held a 7-3, advantage in penalty corners.
Temple will host American in the Temple Tournament Saturday, September 4 at 11:00 a.m. North Carolina will play Iowa in the second game at 1:30 p.m.
