PHILADELPHIA -- Temple senior All-America Candidate Mardy Collins picked up his most significant honor of the preseason as he was named the nation's top point guard by CBS SportsLine.com's Senior Writer Gregg Doyel.
Doyel says of Collins, "At 6-feet-6 and 220 pounds, he's a matchup nightmare at both ends. No wonder he averaged 17.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.8 steals as a junior. His assist total should have been higher, but his teammates shot just 38 percent. Collins averaged 39.8 minutes, and he does more than any point guard in college basketball, but he can't do everything.
Collins earned first team all-Atlantic 10 Conference and first team All-District honors by both the NABC and the USBWA as a junior in 2004-05 when he helped guide Temple to a 16-14 record and a berth in the NIT. It marked the 22nd straight postseason berth for the Owls.
