RICHMOND, VA -- The Temple (8-9, 3-1) field hockey squad dropped their first Atlantic 10 conference contest Sunday afternoon following a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the nationally-ranked Spiders. The Owls' loss breaks a season-high four-game winning streak.

In a game headlining two undefeated conference opponents, the Spiders (9-5, 4-0) used two first half and two second half goals in the win while holding a 16-5 advantage in shots. Their initial tally, at the 17:39 mark of the first frame, was set up by senior Whitney Wells off an attack from the right side and finished by sophomore Shannon Taylor. Taylor's goal was her 12th of the season and fifth of the weekend. Sophomore Erin Arthurs' goal off a penalty corner gave the hosts a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Senior Leslie Russell's tally at the 59:37 mark and Colleen Wevodau's goal in the final minute closed out the scoring for the Spiders.

The Owls' offense, featuring five shots and zero penalty corners, was only able to test Richmond goalkeeper Michelle Swartz three times. Swartz saved all three shots on the way to her fifth shutout of the season.

Defensively, Temple freshman goalkeeper Erin Hanshue posted five saves while sophomore midfielder Alli Lokey recorded two defensive saves.

The Owls remain idle until Friday afternoon when they resume conference play against Rhode Island at 3:00 p.m.
