PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple (9-9, 4-1) field hockey team clinched its third consecutive appearance in the Atlantic 10 Tournament following a 3-0 shutout of Rhode Island Friday afternoon at Geasey Field.
Although the first half went scoreless on both ends, the Owls controlled the circle winning six penalty corners while posting 12 shots. The
Senior forward Melissa Fritze's first goal of the game, and third of the season, came with 21:44 remaining in the first half. Senior defender Ashley Shepps' shot, from sophomore Ashley Bird, kicked off Fritze's stick for the game's initial tally. Eight minutes later, the Owls' seventh penalty corner of the contest resulted in Alli Lokey's sixth goal of the season off feeds from junior Lindsay Holman and senior Katie Stevenson. Lastly, in complementing Lokey's insurance tally, Fritze deposited her second score of the game off a scramble in front of the cage. Shepps was credited with an assist on the Owls' third and final goal.
Defensively for the Owls, senior Dannon Mehaffey posted a defensive save while freshman Erin Hanshue needed just two first half saves in earning her fifth shutout of the season. Hanshue's fifth shutout ranks her first among Atlantic 10 goalkeepers.
The Rams (6-9, 1-4) remained relatively silent on the offensive end while posting five shots. Sophomore M.J. Britt recorded 13 saves in the cage for the visitors.
With the win, the Owls have won five of their last six and are currently riding a six-game home-winning streak.
This will be the field hockey program's 13th appearance in the Atlantic 10 Tournament since 1989. The Owls last won the conference tournament in 1994.
