OWLS DROP HAWKS IN SEASON FINALE, 2-1

10.29.05 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA (10/29/05) -- The Temple field hockey team completed their 2005 regular season and conference schedule with a 2-1 victory over Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field.  With the win, the Owls finish Atlantic 10 conference play with a 6-1 mark.

Temple initiated the game's scoring with just over ten minutes remaining in the first frame following senior Jen Adamek's second goal of the season.  Adamek was able to beat Hawks' goalkeeper following senior Melissa Fritze's feed from the top of the circle.  The Owls carried a 2-0 advantage into the intermission after sophomore Alli Lokey's shot from just inside the right circle found the back of the cage.  Lokey penetrated the Hawks' defense before firing her eighth goal of the season.  Ashley Bird assisted on Lokey's game-winner.

Responding to just three shots in the first half, the Hawks retaliated with seven in the second on Owls' freshman goalkeeper Erin Hanshue.  Saint Joe's second half persistence finally paid dividends at 16:30 mark when junior Maureen Casserly spoiled Hanshue's bid for her sixth shutout this season.  Casserly's unassisted tally was her third this season.

Hanshue would need seven saves to preserve the win for the Owls while Cunfer turned away four Temple shots.

The 6-1 conference finish for the Owls is their best mark since their initial Atlantic 10 slate in 1989.

Following six consecutive home losses to start the 2005 season, first year head coach Amanda Janney's team responded with eight straight home wins to close out the season.

Temple will make a run at their first Atlantic 10 tournament championship since 1994 on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. when Geasey Field will play host to the Owls and the conference's #3 seed.
