FIELD HOCKEY RALLIES TO KNOCK OFF QUAKERS, 3-2

10.5.05 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA -- After a first half that left Temple in at a two-goal deficit, the Owls responded with three unanswered second half goals to complete a 3-2 comeback victory over Penn at Geasey Field Wednesday afternoon.  With the win, Temple improves to 5-8 on the season while the Quakers drop to the .500 mark at 5-5.

The Quakers cracked the scoring less than seven minutes into the first frame when senior Lea Salese rifled her sixth goal of the season past Owls starting goalkeeper Erin Hanshue.  With exactly eight minutes remaining in the first half, Salese's unassisted goal was followed by Nicole Black's first goal of the season.  Black's tally, Penn's final of the afternoon, came off a penalty corner that slipped by a sprawling Hanshue.  Penn out-shot the Owls' 5-4 in the first half while achieving a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners over the entire game.

Temple quickly responded to begin the second half when freshman Mary Catherine Kinneman's feed to sophomore midfielder Alli Lokey only two and a half minutes in put the Owls on the scoreboard and cut the Quaker lead in half.  Temple evened the scoring less than two minutes later when junior forward, and Owls' points-leader, Lindsay Holman, in her first reserve role of the season, redirected a rebound past Quaker goalkeeper Elizabeth Schlossberg for her eighth goal of the year.

The next thirty minutes went scoreless until an Owls penalty corner with just over a minute remaining was converted into a game-winner by junior defender Megan Hannahoe.  Holman's feed with senior Katie Stevenson's stop and Lokey's dish resulted in Hannahoe's fourth goal of the season.

"Our forwards played amazing today.  They attacked well using speed to create for the offense", said first year head coach Amanda Janney, a Penn assistant from a year ago.

"I enjoyed this win.  It feels good to comeback and win a game you knew you could win from the start," Janney exclaimed.

Quaker goalkeeper Elizabeth Schlossberg stopped six shots.  Hanshue posted four saves for the Owls before making way for freshman Kendra Kennedy, who used just one save to register a scoreless second half.

The Owls remain at Geasey Field Friday afternoon for the Golden Rams of West Chester at 3:00 p.m.
