FIELD HOCKEY PREPARES FOR ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIP

PHILADELPHIA -- For the third consecutive season and 14th appearance since 1989, the Temple field hockey team, led by first year head coach Amanda Janney, enters the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament Friday afternoon as the second seed against Massachusetts. Geasey Field, the Owls' home turf, will play host to the two-day event.
The Owls (11-9, 6-1) enter the tournament riding seven wins in their last eight and winners of their last eight contests held at Geasey Field. Temple has been paced offensively by 2004 all-conference selection junior Lindsay Holman (8G, 3A, 19P) and sophomore midfielder Alli Lokey (8G, 6A, 22P). Defensively, senior co-captain Ashley Shepps is currently ranked third nationally in defensive saves (7) while freshman goalkeeper Erin Hanshue has posted five shutouts and a 1.72 GAA.
UMass (7-12, 4-3) qualified for its16th conference tournament appearance in the last 17 seasons following a 2-1 win at Rhode Island Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen, the Atlantic 10's third seed, have received offensive contributions from senior Patricia Borneo (3G, 7A, 13P) and freshman Katelyn Orlando (5G, 2A, 12P). UMass sophomore goalkeeper Becky Letourneau has recorded a .732 save percentage and a 2.19 GAA.
In just one meeting in 2005, the host Owls topped UMass in overtime on Oct. 23 following two goals from junior Megan Hannahoe.
The Owls last won the Atlantic 10 conference tournament in 1994.
In Friday's second game, the Richmond Spiders (13-5, 7-0), winners of their last 31 conference games and bearers of the nation's 20th national ranking, play the fourth seed Saint Joseph's (10-9, 3-4) at 4 p.m.
