11.2.05 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA -- In her first season as Temple's head field hockey coach, Amanda Janney was named Atlantic 10 Co-Coach of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday. In addition to Janney's honor, seniors Ashley Shepps, Katie Stevenson and Melissa Fritze, junior Lindsay Holman, sophomore Alli Lokey, and freshman Erin Hanshue were honored with all-conference accolades.
Janney, a '99 graduate of Wake Forest, spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at Penn before assuming Temple's head coaching position in February. Her initial season on North Broad Street resulted in the Owls' first winning season since 1992 following an 11-9 overall record and a 6-1 finish in the conference. Despite a slow start in 2005 that featured six losses in their first seven contests, Janney rallied her troops to seven wins in their final eight games and the Atlantic 10's second seed in the conference tournament. Janney shares the honor with Saint Louis head coach Maria Whitehead.
For the third straight season, junior forward Lindsay Holman (8G, 3A, 19P) has been named to the conference's first team. Holman's season-opening hat trick at Lehigh triggered her best statistical year as an Owl. Sophomore Alli Lokey (8G, 6A, 22P) joins Holman on the conference's first team following a season that ranked her tied for first among Owls in goals and the leader in assists and points. Both Holman and Lokey finished tied for sixth in the conference with eight goals.
Seniors Ashley Shepps and Katie Stevenson were both selected to the conference's second team. Shepps, named an alternate in the NFHCA North/South All-Star Game, finished the season ranked third nationally in defensive saves with seven while Stevenson provided steady defensive play throughout the season with four. Offensively, Shepps and Stevenson recorded three and two assists, respectively.
In addition to her second team honors, Shepps was named to the Atlantic 10's all-academic team while boasting a 3.88 cumulative GPA.
Following a 2004 red-shirted season, freshman goalkeeper Erin Hanshue was named to the conference's all-rookie team. Hanshue ranked second among the conference's goalkeepers with five shutouts and a 1.65 GAA. She was also named the Atlantic 10's Co-Rookie of the Week (9/26) following three consecutive shutouts over VCU, Delaware, and Longwood. She also recieved Honorable Mention honors.
Melissa Fritze joined Hanshue on the Honorable Mention team. Fritze started in 19 of 20 games this season, scoring four goals and dishing two assists for 10 points.
The Owls begin their quest for the program's first Atlantic 10 Conference tournament crown since 1994 on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against UMass. The championship, held at Geasey Field, is a two-day event and features #20 Richmond and Saint Joseph's on the same day at 4:00 p.m. Winners of both games will vie for title Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
