FIELD HOCKEY ENDS SEASON WITH 2-1 OT LOSS TO UMASS IN A-10 SEMIS

PHILADELPHIA - UMass' Erin Parker netted the overtime game-winner to allow #3 seed Massachusetts defeat #2 seeded Temple, 2-1, in game one of the 2005 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship.  Temple, playing in its fourth consecutive A-10 Championship, ends the season with an 11-10 overall record and a 6-1 A-10 record.  Massachusetts (8-12, 4-3 A-10) advances to tomorrow's title game vs. #1 Richmond at 2 p.m. on Temple's Geasey Field.

Temple got on the board early in the game for a 1-0 advantage when Megan Hannohoe sent the ball into the circle and Melissa Fritze tipped it into the far left-hand corner just three and a half minutes into the contest.  Shea equalized just under eight minutes later after dribbling through the circle, wearing down the Owl defense and forcing TU goalie Erin Hanshue out of position.

In the second half, it looked as if Temple was going to walk away the winner after the Owls found the back of the cage just eight minutes into the period but after review the goal was called back and the score stood, forcing the overtime period.

Both teams had chances to score early in the extra period but it was until Parker's goal with 4:11 remaining that the final 2-1 tally was decided.  In game one, Mary Shea hit the ball into the circle and Parker got a touch on it for the game-winner.

Hanshue earned six saves on the day, while UMass' Becky LeTourneau tallied seven.
