MARDY COLLINS NAMED NABC FIRST TEAM ALL-DISTRICT

2.18.05 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA -- Junior point guard Mardy Collins had his All-America candidacy validated today with the announcement of the NABC All-District teams. Collins, the Owls's leading scorer with a 17.6 average, joined Pittsbugh's Carl Krauser and Chevon Troutman and Villanova's Allan Ray and Curtis Sumter on the five-man first team from District 3.

Collins, who ranks second in the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring and steals (2.9 spg.), has helped lead the Cherry and White to a 12-10 record and second place in the A-10 East Division with an 8-3 mark. He has been named A-10 and Big 5 Player of the Week four times during the season and is a leading contender for Player of the year honors in both leagues.

The 6-6 floor leader has topped 20 points in a game nine times on the season, including a season-high 29 points in the team's 68-62 win at Duquesne Wednesday night. He has also scored in double figures in 20 of the Owls' 22 games.

Collins' steal average ranks ninth nationally and his 65 thefts are already above his total for all of last season (51). He also has shined the most when the bright lights are on, averaging 20 points per game in six nationally-televised contests.

Selections to the NABC All-District teams were voted on by member coaches of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The NABC recognized 150 players from 15 districts. These players are eligible for the NABC Division I All-America team, which will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
