PHILADELPHIA- Ryan Langford, a former assistant coach at Appalachian State, has been hired as the assistant field hockey coach, as announced by Head Coach Amanda Janney.  Langford will assist Janney in all aspects of coaching including recruiting, travel and fundraising.

Langford has been involved with coaching and playing on both the collegiate and international stages for the past 15 years.  A seven-year member of the United States National Team, Langford has competed in the Pan American and World Cup Games.  After being selected as an alternate to the 1996 Olympic team, he lived and trained as an Elite Resident Athlete in the San Diego Olympic Training Center before heading off to Atlanta.  Langford followed that up with a spot on the 1999 Pan American Games squad, where he served as captain.  In 2001, he was part of a team that qualified for the World Cup.

Langford is also highly skilled at indoor play, competing as a member of the United States National Indoor Team in 1997 and again in 2002-03.  In 2002, the team participated in the Indoor Pan American Cup, where its stellar performance earned the U.S. a spot in the 2003 Indoor World Cup.

As a coach, Langford's resume is just as impressive.  He spent a year in Hanover, Germany at the Hanover 87 Tennis and Hockey Club, where he served as coach of the men's first and second teams and the girls under nine and under 16 squads.

Upon returning to the United States, Langford took a job as an assistant coach at Southwest Missouri State.  While at SMS, Langford was involved with recruiting, fundraising and training.  He also developed a fitness program designed to enhance athlete speed and performance.

From there Langford moved on to Appalachian State, where he served as both an assistant coach and a physical education instructor.

Langford has been the director of various camps on both the collegiate and national level.  In 2004, Langford was elected to the United States Men's Under-21 Selection Committee.

A 2003 graduate of Appalachian State University, Langford holds a bachelor's degree in geography, specializing in geographic information systems.
