FRISCO, TX -- Temple senior Mardy Collins was named to the USA Basketball U21 Team as the squad's roster was officially announced late Wednesday night. Collins is joined by Curtis Withers of Atlantic 10 Conference member school Charlotte and Allan Ray of city-rival Villanova.
Collins, a two-time All-District honoree, tallied eight points over 15 minutes of play in the team's Global Games opener, a 119-64 win over Ukraine Wednesday afternoon at the Dr. Pepper Star Center. Playing mostly two-guard, Collins shot three-of-six from the field (2-4 from 3PT range) while dishing three assists against one turnover.
Withers led the USA squad in scoring with 22 points on eight-of-10 shooting while Ray tallied just two points in the contest.
Team USA, which is under the direction of Saint Joseph's head coach Phil Martelli, is using the 2005 Global Games as a tune-up for the 2005 FIBA U21 World Championship, to be played Aug. 5-14 in Cordoba and Mar del Plata, Argentina. Martelli is assisted by Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint and Georgia head coach Dennis Felton.
