PHILADELPHIA - Melissa Stubblefield, a four-year member of the Lock Haven University field hockey team, has been named a graduate assistant field hockey coach at Temple University. Stubblefield, who graduated with a bachelor of science in education in 2005, will assist first-year head coach Amanda Janney in all aspects of coaching including recruiting, traveling and fundraising.
Due to her success on the field as a player, Stubblefield has been added to the staff, primarily, as the goalie coach. "I am excited to start the season with an excellent goalkeeper coach who will help to maintain the Temple tradition of having a skilled goalkeeper and a tough team defense," Janney said.
While at Lock Haven, Stubblefield was a three-year starter in the cage while leading the 2004 squad, a year in which the Lady Eagles moved to the Division I level, as a captain. In the same year, she helped guide the Lady Eagles to a 19-1 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in the Northeast Conference. After ranking second nationally in goals against average (.702) in her final season, Stubblefield was named first team All-Northeast Conference.
"She has great goalkeeping experience and was highly recommended by her Lock Haven coaches as a confident and strong team leader," Janney said.
As a Division II affiliate of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in 2002 and 2003, she received second and first team all-conference honors, respectively. In three seasons, Stubblefield saved 224 shots, recorded 23 shutouts (4th all-time at Lock Haven), and posted a career .816 GAA (5th all-time). In addition to her play at the collegiate level, she also competed in six international games while in Scotland and Ireland in May of 2004.
Stubblefield brings an extensive resume as a camp instructor to her first coaching stint. Primarily as a goalkeeper coach, she has instructed at several camps over the last three summers, including Bloomsburg University Field Hockey Camp, Lock Haven University, Shippensburg University, the East West Field Hockey Camp, Brewster Field Hockey Camp, and the All Sports Camp. While working with campers ages 12-18, her responsibilities included assisting and developing skills, teaching strategy and techniques, and creating drills and activities.
