8.9.05 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Temple University senior Mardy Collins has been named as one of the 50 candidates to the 2006 John R. Wooden Award. Collins, currently competing with the USA Under 21 squad at the FIBA U21 World Championships in Argentina, is one of four Atlantic 10 Conference players on the list joining Pops Mensah-Bonsu (George Washington), Steven Smith (La Salle) and Curtis Withers (Charlotte).

A 6-6 point guard, Collins is coming off a solid junior season where he led John Chaney's Temple Owls in virtually every statistical category. He topped the Cherry and White in scoring (17.5 ppg.), rebounding (5.9 rpg.), assists (3.6 apg.) and steals (2.7 spg.) during the 2004-05 season while earning 2005 All-District first team honors from the NABC and USBWA. Collins also was named to the 2005 All-Atlantic 10 Conference first team, the 2005 A-10 All-Defensive Team and the 2005 Philadelphia Big 5 first team. He also was a five-time player of the week honoree by both the A-10 and the Big 5.

In mid-January, the Wooden Award committee will release the midseason top 30 on CBS Sports, and on Tuesday, March 28, the 10-player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced. The 2006 Award ceremony, which will include the presentation of the Men's and Women's Wooden Award, the Wooden Award All-American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, will be held at The Los Angeles Athletic Club on April 8, 2006, and will be broadcast live on a national CBS telecast.
