PHILADELPHIA - The Temple (1-4) field hockey team dropped its fourth straight decision Saturday afternoon following a 1-0 loss to North Carolina in the opening match of the Temple Invitational.  Tar Heel midfielder Rachel Dawson tallied the lone goal of the afternoon.

Head Coach Amanda Janney, in her first season, got solid production from a veteran defense and freshman goalkeeper Erin Hanshue.  Seniors Ashley Shepps and Katie Stevenson each registered their first defensive saves of the season while Hanshue saved 12 shots.  The Owls offense found scoring opportunities to be few and far between with only three shots.

"Erin and the defense really stepped up and played excellent today," said the first year coach.

The Tar Heel (5-0) offense remained consistent throughout the game while challenging Hanshue with 18 total shots and 10 corners.  Dawson, a South Jersey native, scored her first goal of the season, early in the second half, off a corner set up by sophomores Heather Kendell and Xan Funk.

Senior goalkeeper Katy Tran continued her strong play in the cage recording her second straight shutout and fourth of the season.

The Temple Invitational continues tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. when the Tar Heels return to Geasey Field against Monmouth.  The Owls and Villanova Wildcats square off at 3:00 p.m.
