TEMPLE POSTS THIRD STRAIGHT SHUTOUT WITH 1-0 WIN OVER LONGWOOD
9.24.05 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA -- Temple won its third straight game, all via shutout, on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Longwood on Geasey Field. Junior Megan Hannahoe tallied the lone goal off a first half penalty corner and freshman goalkeeper Erin Hanshue extended her scoreless streak to 218 minutes. The Owls improve to 4-6 with the victory.
The Cherry and White controlled play throughout the game, outshooting the visiting Lancers (2-5), 17-5, and earned a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners. Hannahoe's goal came at the 12:55 mark and was set up nicely by sophomore Alli Lokey, who earned her team-leading fourth assist of the season.
Temple had several opportunities to add an insurance goal, but was unable to find the back of the cage. Junior Lindsay Holman found herself open on a breakaway but after making a move past Longwood keeper Avanell Schmitz (nine saves), her shot went wide. In the closing minutes, TU had a flurry of shots and a trio of penalty corners but could not add to its lead.
Hanshue had to stop two shots for her third consecutive shutout. The Owls last posted three consecutive shutouts in 2003 when All-American Erin Conroy blanked Fairfield (10/5), UMass (10/10), and Rhode Island (10/12).
Temple visits Drexel on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
