LATE RUTGERS RALLY TRIPS UP FIELD HOCKEY, 2-1
9.29.05 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY -- The Owls (4-8) dropped their second straight game on the road Thursday evening following a 2-1 loss to Rutgers at the RU Stadium Complex. Both Scarlet Knight goals were scored in the final 11 minutes of the contest.
After a scoreless first half, Owls senior front-liner Rachel Barber broke the game's 47 minute scoring drought when she deposited a Lindsay Holman feed. Barber's goal was her second of the season while Holman tallied her first assist of the season. At a 4-2 disadvantage in penalty corners, Temple registered only three shots the entire game.
Barber's goal, and the Temple lead, were short-lived following Jocelyn Mattina's unassisted goal at the 59th minute. Less than eight minutes later, with just under three to play, Kara Spector put the Scarlet Knights ahead off a penalty corner set up by Corinne Bach and Mattina.
On the defensive end, freshman Kendra Kennedy made her first intercollegiate start. Kennedy last saw action in the second half against Penn State (9/14) when she stopped three shots while allowing one goal.
While Rutgers (6-5) goalkeeper Rosalyn Wentko was sidelined due to an injury suffered last Sunday against Saint Joseph's, head coach Liz Tchou instead utilized freshman defender Kim Scott as a substitute keeper. Scott, wearing a helmet and chest protector during the two Owls' penalty corners, was permitted to play the field in all other situations. Thus, as a team, the Scarlet Knights went without a save in the win while allowing one goal.
Temple returns home to Geasey Field Wednesday afternoon for visiting Penn at 3:30 p.m.
