1.30.06 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - First it was A-10 Player of the Week, then Big 5 honored him and last, but not least, Temple senior guard Mardy Collins has been named ESPN.com Player of the Week by the website's lead college basketball writer, Andy Katz. The Owl co-captain earned theses honors for his best week of the season in leading the Cherry and White to impressive wins over Xavier and nationally-ranked Maryland.
The 6-6 play-maker averaged 26.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 4.0 steals in Temple's wins over Xavier (81-79, 1/25) and #18/19 Maryland (91-85, 1/28). Against the Musketeers, Collins tallied a game-high 28 points while grabbing seven rebounds, dishing five assists and making three steals. His last assist was to Antywane Robinson who drained a 15-footer with 1.1 seconds to play for the winning points. In the Maryland win, Collins led the Owls with 25 points and distributed a career-high 12 assists.
Katz wrote the following about Collins' week. Those are first-round numbers for a point guard the NBA folks are starting to covet. Better than that, if Collins can continue to produce like that, Temple is a legit threat to win the A-10 conference tournament and get John Chaney back to the Dance one more time.
Collins also moved past former Temple standouts Aaron McKie (1,650 points, 1992-94), Mike Vreeswyk (1,650, 1985-89) and Granger Hall (1,651, 1980-85) and into seventh place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,672 points.
