PHILADELPHIA - Behind the shutout effort of sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue, the Temple field hockey team extended their winning streak to six games following a 2-0 win over Longwood Sunday afternoon. Hanshue's fourth shutout of the season was complemented by a pair of goals from freshman forward Mandi Ruth and sophomore midfielder Mary Catherine Kinneman. With the win, the Owls head into Atlantic 10 play with a 9-3 overall mark while the Lancers fall to 4-7.
Following a scoreless first half that saw Longwood win five penalty corners to the host's two, Ruth tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 36:59 mark. The reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week was set up at the right post by junior midfielder Leanne Vogelsong before beating Longwood goalkeeper Erin West.
Kinneman's goal, her second of the season, provided the Owls with a two-goal cushion with just over six minutes remaining. The junior midfielder penetrated the Lancer defense before finding herself alone with West for the match's final score.
"We're just very excited with how we've performed in non-conference games and over the last six wins," said Kinneman of the program's longest winning streak since 1991. "We came into the season with a goal of playing better than .500 out of conference and to be better than six games - is just great."
In posting two saves and the shutout, Hanshue now boasts an impressive 1.04 GAA. West posted seven saves for the Lancers.
Following the win, second year head coach Amanda Janney praised the Owls' defensive effort and the development of her young team.
"Again, we had another great team effort and we're especially proud of our defense," said Janney. "The more contributions we continue to get from our younger players, the more you really see this team's depth."
The Owls will look to avenge last season's conference tournament overtime loss to Massachusetts on Friday when they travel to Amherst for a 3:00 p.m. start.
