WEST CHESTER, PA - The Temple field hockey team won its second straight match Sunday afternoon following a resounding 5-1 win over West Chester. The Owls offensive outburst featured four different scorers, 15 shots and a 7-2 penalty corner advantage. With the victory, the Cherry and White eclipse last season's win total (11) after just 16 outings and are winners of 12 contests for the first time in the program's history since 1991 (15-6-2).
Despite the Owls second five-goal game this season (6-1 vs. Monmouth, 9/16/06), a slow start was coupled with West Chester taking a one-goal lead following junior forward Sara Conrad's sixth goal of the season. In fact, the Temple offense didn't kick into gear until less than six minutes into the second half at the 40:53 mark when sophomore Liz Watto scored the first of five goals over a 12 minute period. Watto's unassisted goal, her third this season, was followed less than three minutes later when senior Megan Hannahoe scored the game's eventual decisive tally, at the 43:37 mark, courtesy of junior midfielder Ashley Bird.
Junior midfielder Alli Lokey added successive, unassisted tallies, her seventh and eighth goals this season, at the 47:32 mark and 49:39 mark to give the Cherry and White a comfortable three-score advantage. Sophomore Mary Catherine Kinneman's third tally of the season, at the 53:16 mark, finalized the afternoon's scoring and the Owls' first Atlantic 10 four-goal victory since a 5-0 win versus La Salle in 1997.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue, playing every minute for the Owls in the cage this season and against younger sister Kimberly, a freshman with the Golden Rams, posted one save in the win and lowers her goals against average total to a conference-best 1.08. Sharing the goalkeeping duties for the Golden Rams, sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Dull and freshman Joelle Zarefoss combined to stopped 10 shots.
After playing six of their last seven outings away from home, the Cherry and White return to Geasey Field Friday afternoon against 18th-ranked Richmond at 3:00 p.m.
