PHILADELPHIA - Temple University sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue has been named OwlSports.com's September Athlete of the Month, announced Monday. While the Temple field hockey team has jumped out to a 9-3 overall mark and the program's best start since 1990, Hanshue has posted a career-best 1.04 goals against average (GAA) and .794 save percentage while stopping 50 shots.
Entering Sunday's game against Longwood, Hanshue ranked 8th and 15th nationally in GAA and save percentage, respectively. Through games played before October 2, the 2005 all-rookie team and honorable mention honoree ranks first in the Atlantic 10 in GAA, is tied for the conference-lead in shutouts (4) and places fourth in saves. For the week of September 4 - 11, Hanshue received Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week honors in recognition of a 1-0 blanking of Rider and tying a career high with 12 saves in a 2-1 loss to Maryland.
"Erin is one of the fastest and most athletic players on this year's team and that shows in her hustle and big-play ability," said reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Coach of the Year Amanda Janney of the Hummelstown, Pa. native. "Her competitive and winning attitude is truly becoming evident in her production this season and our team's record."
Hanshue and the Owls will look to avenge last season's conference tournament overtime loss to Massachusetts on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The trip to Amherst marks the first of four consecutive conference games the Cherry and White will play on the road.
