PHILADELPHIA - Richmond freshman forward Lindsay Conrad's goal just under 13 minutes into overtime capped a dramatic 2-1 Atlantic 10 match Friday afternoon at Geasey Field. For the second time this season, and third time in her career, sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue stopped a career-high 12 shots as the Owls fell to 12-5 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders seventh consecutive win improves their overall record to 12-4 and their conference mark to 5-0.
After 16 and a half minutes of scoreless play, as team waited for the other's first mistake, the Cherry and White initiated the scoring following junior Alli Lokey's team-leading 9th goal of the season. Following a failed penalty corner seconds before, juniors Ashley Bird and Leanne Vogelsong set up the game's first tally. The Owls held the nationally ranked Spiders to just two shots in the first half as they carried their one-goal lead into intermission.
Down a goal in the second frame, the Richmond offense ignited in peppering Hanshue for nine second half shots. The Owls narrowly missed extending their lead to two goals as sophomore forward Liz Watto's redirection in front was padded over the cage by Richmond sophomore goalkeeper Becca Weaver. Weaver's four saves in regulation kept the Spiders within striking distance before sophomore forward Alex Malatesta flipped in the match's tying goal with just 8.3 ticks remaining. Richmond's seventh penalty corner of the half resulted in Malatesta's 5th goal this season and the game's equalizer.
The Spiders' relentless offensive attack carried itself into the extra session in the form of seven shots and five penalty corners. The visitors twice missed scoring chances as junior midfielder Ines Reimundes fired a shot off the post and junior midfielder Shannon Taylor sent Hanshue sprawling for a brilliant save. Richmond's 13th penalty corner of the afternoon produced a loose ball before senior midfielder Jodi Murphy found Conrad for the game's clincher.
Defensively, Temple senior defender Megan Hannahoe was credited with a defensive save in the second half.
Temple will look rebound Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field against Saint Louis. The contest, slated to begin at 12:00 p.m., will conclude the Owls' home schedule and will honor Hannahoe, the team's lone senior, for her four seasons wearing the Cherry and White.
